Fall Season Is Here: 5 Tips To Make Fall More Sustainable

Fall is a period of transition: leaves are changing their colors and the weather is getting colder. But, fall is also the time of harvest, reaping the rewards of what has already been sown. It would be ironic to celebrate the season with single-use products and products that can harm our nature, right? Therefore, we have five tips to make your fall season more sustainable and cozier.

1. Eat seasonally

Fall being the harvest season is the perfect excuse to make the most delicious seasonal meals and sweets. Pumpkins, squashes, sweet potatoes, figs, plums, and apples can be used to make the most amazing fall recipes to comfort you in the changing and colder weather. If you are in need of some inspiration, make sure to visit Pick Up Limes and discover a new world of vegan fall recipes that taste even better than they look! Moreover, there are also plenty of recipes on our own website, check for example this risotto. So, plan your meals ahead, reduce food waste and visit that farmers’ market around the corner. These kinds of tips are explained in more detail in this article.

2. Make your own fall decorations

What is more fun than going on nature walks and bringing it to your home to give it a little fall make-over? There is no need to buy lots of fall decorations that are disposable. Instead, when you are going on your next walk in the park or the woods, bring some foraged branches, chestnuts, leaves, or pumpkins. A sustainable fall is also the chance to get creative and make the most of what this colorful season has to offer.

3. Look for (or make) planet-friendly candles

Fall isn’t complete if you don’t have a scented candle that makes your home smell like it. Unfortunately, most candles are made from paraffin wax, which is in turn made from fossil fuels (a.k.a. the big bad thing for our planet). For a more planet-friendly and cozy fall afternoon or evening, consider buying candles that are made from soy or beeswax from small businesses. Even better: try to make them yourself! Another reason to let your creativity speak this season using your all-time favorite scents.

4. Sustainable sweater weather

There is nothing better than fall fashion and it often means cozy sweaters and layered outfits. Before succumbing to the new fall collections that are offered everywhere, take a good look at your closet. Plan your capsule fall wardrobe and donate items you don’t wear or need anymore. Additionally, when adding new pieces to your wardrobe, consider thrifting in your favorite local thrift store or support sustainable slow-fashion brands that use eco-friendly materials. You could also use the app Good on You to figure out which brands are sustainable, read more about that here. Either way, you’ll be sure to look fashionable and stay warm this season.

5. Spring fall cleaning

And lastly, as fall being the season of holidays, there is nothing better than a clean and tidy place to welcome friends and family for a cozy evening. Before running to the store and buying lots of chemical cleaners, try making your own green cleaner. You can simply do this by mixing up ingredients like lemon, vinegar, and baking soda. You could also try to add typical fall smells like pumpkin spice, cinnamon or dried orange for a cozy scent. Check out this article for green cleaning tips. Your own brewed cleaner can tackle the most stubborn household mess while also thinking of the planet.
